Windows 8 is a Microsoft operating system that comes in three different editions, each with its own features and capabilities. The lowest edition, simply called Windows 8, is the basic version that offers the core functionality of the operating system. Windows 8 Pro is a higher edition that adds more advanced features for professional and power users. These features include BitLocker, which encrypts the data on the hard drive; Hyper-V, which allows running virtual machines; the ability to join a domain, which connects the computer to a network of other computers; and the option to install Windows Media Center as a paid add-on, which provides media playback and recording capabilities. Users who have Windows 8 can upgrade to Windows 8 Pro by purchasing a \"Pro Pack\" license through the Add features to Windows option in the settings. This license also includes Windows Media Center.[139][140][141] Windows 8 Enterprise is the highest edition that is designed for business environments and large organizations. It has all the features of Windows 8 Pro, plus additional features such as Windows To Go, which allows running Windows 8 from a USB drive; AppLocker, which restricts the applications that can be run on the computer; and DirectAccess, which provides remote access to corporate resources without a VPN. Windows 8 Enterprise is only available through volume licensing, which means it can only be purchased in bulk by organizations.[141] There is also a version of Windows 8 for devices that use ARM architecture, such as tablets and smartphones. This version is called Windows RT, and it is marketed as an edition of Windows 8, but it is not compatible with applications designed for other editions of Windows 8. Windows RT can only run applications from the Microsoft Store or those pre-installed by Microsoft or the device manufacturer.[141] 0efd9a6b88
